Smoothies and milkshakes are both popular treats that taste great and cool you down. However, there are distinct differences between these two delicious creations. Most of these differences are in the ingredients and toppings, but does that mean people prefer one to the other? Shakes are a bit more decadent and less healthy than smoothies, but they are always worth the splurge! **Ingredients and toppings** Typically, smoothies are healthier than milkshakes. Most smoothies are made of frozen yogurt instead of ice cream. However, some include crushed ice and fresh fruit juice as the base of the drink. Smoothies may rely on a natural sweetener, such as honey or fresh fruit pieces. These drinks can also include syrup, nuts, protein powder, soy milk, chocolate or peanut butter for a sweeter taste. Smoothies can be more than one flavor, such as Pineapple Coconut or Banana Blueberry. Most milkshakes include ice cream and whole milk as the basic ingredients needed. However, these cold drinks can also include an array of mix-ins, such as candy, cookie pieces or syrups. Chopped nuts, chocolate chips or sprinkles can be added to create even more flavor. You can even chop up fresh fruit to create a fruit-flavored milkshake, such as bananas or strawberries. Most shakes are traditionally topped off with a swirl of whipped cream and a cherry. **Do people have a preference?** There doesn't seem to be a trend when it comes to smoothies and milkshakes. Smoothies have experienced a surge in popularity as people become more health-conscious. With vitamins and protein added in, these drinks can have a range of benefits. These benefits enable consumers to feel less guilty about consuming smoothies on a regular basis. However, nothing replaces the allure of a tasty milkshake. Kids and adults both clamor for the creamy flavor of the indulgent treat. Popular, more modern shakes, offer a wider variety of options than standard shake flavors. It looks like shakes and smoothies are both here to stay!
